About

The Location

The Turks and Caicos Islands, located 925 square kilometers southeast of Miami in the northern Caribbean, consist of 500 square kilometers of the Atlantic Ocean. Their name originates from the Turk's Head cactus, and "Caicos" means "string of islands." The islands have a rich history, with Taino and Lucayan populations preceding European settlers, who arrived in the 17th century to develop cotton and sisal plantations. After becoming part of the Bahamas in 1766 and later annexed to Jamaica, they became a British Crown Colony in the 1970s.

Today, the inhabited islands include Salt Cay, Grand Turk, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Providenciales, Pine Cay, and Parrot Cay, a private resort under COMO Hotels and Resorts. With a population of 30,000 to 35,000, tourism is the primary industry, supported by fishing and offshore finance. The islands boast the world's third-largest coral reef system, over 370 kilometers of pristine white sand beaches, and rich marine life, making them a premier destination for diving and eco-tourism. Additionally, salt ponds and marshes provide habitats for diverse bird species, with 12 cays designated as protected breeding grounds.
