About
COMO Cocoa Island
Malé Atoll, Maldives
In December 2002, COMO Hotels and Resorts debuted its first private island resort, COMO Cocoa Island, in the Maldives, marking a significant addition to the Indian Ocean's luxury offerings. Nestled among the South Malé coral atolls, this tranquil resort is easily accessible via a 40-minute speedboat transfer from Malé International Airport, allowing guests to enjoy a quieter, less developed area compared to the more crowded North Malé atoll. The island, known locally as Makunufushi, features pristine white sands and a vibrant house reef that encircles a crystal-clear lagoon teeming with marine life.
Designed by Singapore architect Cheong Yew Kuan, COMO Cocoa Island combines contemporary and indigenous styles, with many accommodations modeled after traditional Maldivian dhoni boats. Following a comprehensive renovation in 2019, the resort now boasts enhanced amenities, including private pools for select villas and a newly created gym and yoga center. The resort comprises 33 elegantly designed villas, each offering seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces with stunning ocean views. Interiors blend natural materials with a fresh, clean aesthetic, creating a serene atmosphere reflective of the island's beauty. Dining is a highlight at COMO Cocoa Island, with the Ufaa restaurant emphasizing seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and culinary influences from the Malabar Coast, ensuring a memorable gastronomic experience for all guests.

About
The Location
COMO Cocoa Island has a rich history, once owned by pioneering photographer Eric Klemm, who arrived in the Maldives in 1976. Inspired by the region's beauty, Klemm built a four-bungalow hotel in 1980, capturing the island's essence through his lens. Remarkably, the island remains largely unchanged since Klemm’s time, thanks to effective government policies that restrict new constructions from exceeding the height of palm trees. The Maldivian tourism industry prioritizes sustainable, high-quality developments, avoiding mid- to low-market options that compromise the environment.
The Maldives, an archipelago of 1,192 islands stretching 754 kilometers, boasts pristine natural landscapes, with most islands measuring less than two square kilometers and sitting only two meters above sea level. While environmental challenges such as rising sea levels and coral bleaching have affected the region, positive signs of recovery are emerging. The islands enjoy a warm climate year-round, with distinct seasons ideal for diving and marine life observation. Visitors to COMO Cocoa Island can also immerse themselves in the local culture, guided by the resort's knowledgeable staff, who share insights into the Maldivian way of life and its predominantly Muslim community, known for their welcoming nature.
